Students’ actions selfish

-

THE student protests have been allowed to get way out of hand and are now totally counter productive. When violence, destruction and intimidation are viewed as a democratic right things have gone badly wrong. The attitude of entitlement that is driving these protests is denying the right of the students who want to work and complete their year. This is unacceptable and extremely selfish.

A university education has always been reserved for those who warrant it through hard work and achievement. Now it is seen as a right, whether the student is suitable or not. This allows those who do not appreciate the value of a tertiary education to stop others who have earned it from making the most of it.

There is no such thing as “free” education. The taxpayer will have to pay. And it is one thing to finance a student who wants to achieve but financing students who have time to do anything but learn is asking far too much. — Judy van Aardt, Vincent
