Bucs hold on to reach quarters

-

ORLANDO Pirates advanced to the 2016 Telkom KnockOut Cup quarterfinals after overcoming Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-1 yesterday afternoon.

The Buccaneers hosted Arrows in the last-16 encounter, which was played at the Orlando Stadium.

It took only 10 minutes for Mpho Makola to fire Pirates into the lead with a thunderous drive that beat Arrows goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva to make it 1-0.

Tendai Ndoro set up his Pirates teammate Luvuyo Memela inside the Arrows box just 10 minutes later, but Memela’s strike was blocked by the defence, and the ball was cleared away.

In the 25th minute, Arrows winger Wayde Jooste controlled the ball brilliantly and played a good cross into the Pirates box, which eluded his teammates.

Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo was called into action when he denied Danny Phiri to ensure that the first half ended with the home side leading 1-0.

However, the visitors levelled matters a minute after the hourmark, when Jooste beat Mhlongo with a beautiful free-kick to make it 1-1.

But it took only 12 minutes for Pirates to restore their lead through Memela.

The winger beat Mbaeva with a powerful, low shot to make it 2-1 to the Buccaneers.

Despite several late attacks by Arrows, Mhlongo and his Pirates teammates stood firm at the back, and celebrated as they walked away the victors. — SuperSport.com
