Buffalo fired to stampede past league rookies

- By ZINGISA MVUMVU

FC Buffalo will be hoping to close the gap in the title race for the ABC Motsepe League championship when they host Callies FC at the Jan Smuts tomorrow.

Currently fourth on 14 points, five behind log-leaders EC Bees, the East London side just cannot afford to drop any points in this clash.

Their title race fortunes were dealt a blow last weekend when they played to a one-all stalemate with struggling Subs.

And in Callies, they meet determined league rookies who are firmly staying on course in the title race in third place on 17 points.

It is for this reason that Callies are a dangerous opponent whose loss may see them swap positions with Buffalo, albeit depending on other results.

Both sides have lost twice, but Buffalo have played one match less to Callies’ eight.

Defensively, the stats favour the home side who have leaked only four times in seven outings which makes them the joint third best defensive side in the league.

But in attack, Callies have the upperhand because although they have a porous defence that has conceded 11 goals in eight matches, they have a sharp attack than any other of the 15 clubs in the league with 20 goals, making it 11 more than Buffalo’s goals tally.

The spotlight tomorrow will also be on the Buffalo City Metro derby between log-leaders Bees who take on Mdantsane Mighty Bucks at the Bhisho Stadium.

This will be a derby to watch with Bees undefeated thus far this season.

On the other side Mighty Bucks have achieved their first two back-to-back victories following a poor start to the season.

Other Motsepe League weekend fixtures:

Tonight: Morning Stars v WSU (Zwide Stadium), Highbury v Matatiele Pros (Gelvandale) and Young Ideas v Subs (Motherwell Stadium, NU2).

Tomorrow at 3pm: Matta Milan v Tornado (Idutywa Stadium), Future Tigers v Lion City (Ginsberg Stadium) and Mthatha City v City Lads (Rotary Stadium in Mthatha). — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
