Bucks dead set on ending dreaded stalemates once and for all

- By ZINGISA MVUMVU

NFD draw specialists Mthatha Bucks will be going all out to turn their fortunes around when they visit Santos in an NFD encounter this afternoon.

The Mthatha outfit, in 11 outings, have drawn a staggering six matches – joint second highest draw specialists in the league. That means a possible 12 points dropped.

While admitting that this was a troubling statistic, assistant coach Mondli Funani was hopeful of a positive result today.

Bucks’ relegation woes last season turned around with a 2-1 win against the same opponents at the same venue.

Funani believes this gives them the psychological edge but cautioned against complacency. “We are ready for Santos, a very tough side when playing at home but we have the mental advantage after we beat them at the same venue last season.”

According to Funani, putting an end to draws will help them close the gap between them and the top three clubs on the logstandings. Bucks are currently lying sixth on 15 points after three wins, six draws and two losses.

In this regard, maximum points at the expense of “The People’s Team” was non-negotiable today, said Funani. “We must not allow our opponents to score first and early which is the root of the draws we are talking about.”

While Santos are third from bottom with 10 points, underestimating them would be Bucks’ downfall. Funani knows this too well and called on his charges to bring their A-game, even one better than in their oneall stalemate against Royal Eagles.

“We managed a draw against Eagles and we played well in that match. But because of the funny nature of football, Santos – although languishing at the bottom, may prove to be the toughest nut to crack,” he said.” —
