Kowie cops net their biggest tik bust yet

- By DAVID MACGREGOR

PORT Alfred police made their biggest crystal meth bust after a man was arrested over the weekend, allegedly with 2kg of the drug worth R400 000 under the seat of his car.

Oguchuckwa Agumbmili, 49, appeared briefly in the Port Alfred Magistrates Court today on charges of dealing and possession of drugs after local highway patrol police pulled over a “suspicious vehicle” in the resort town on Saturday and found crystal meth and four mandrax tablets.

Agumbmili was remanded in custody by magistrate Xolile Dlulisa until Thursday when he is scheduled to make a formal bail application.

The court heard that his address needed to be confirmed before his next appearance.

Although he speaks Igbo, one of the four official languages in Nigeria, the court was told that Agumbmili would not require an interpreter during his bail application.

Local police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender yesterday said the 2kg of crystal methamphetamine (also known as tik) bust was the biggest single haul of hard drugs in the town.

“We have recently had quite a number of arrests for drugs but nothing this big,” she said.

Govender said they had recently received complaints about an alleged increase in drug dealing in the area.

She urged the public to report suspected drug dealers to the police saying any information would be treated as confidential.

Govender said 2kg of crystal meth had a street value of R400 000, while mandrax tablets came in at R20 each.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), crystal meth is a highly addictive substance. —
