Sons of music icons in tribute at Guild

- By POLISWA PLAATJIE

THE sons of legendary South African music icons, the late Taliep Petersen and Richardo Groenewald will be playing at the Guild Theatre today for one night only.

The singers, Rick-Lynn Groenewald and Ashur Petersen will donate proceeds towards renovating Parkside Primary School which was vandalised two months ago.

The concert will also feature Cape Town band, Jeodhouse Band.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Petersen said it would be his first time performing in the Eastern Cape.

Today’s performance will be part of Petersen’s national tour.

People should expect to have fun and laughter at the show, he said.

“My performance will get a little emotional as I will also do a few of my father’s songs,” he said.

His father wrote and directed top international music shows such as District Six and Fairyland. Petersen, an accomplished musician, has performed throughout the country, in Australia and England.

He recently performed in memory of his late father at the Grand West Arena in Cape Town to an audience of more than 10 000 people. “This year marks 10 years since his passing and I thought it would be good to pay homage to him,” he said.

At the show in Grand West Arena, Petersen said he got to play with all the musicians who worked with his father.

“The show was amazing. Not only because I was on stage with people who work with my father but seeing people coming to support and remember my father.”

The Guild Theatre’s Faried Kops said when they heard about the vandalism at Parkside Primary School they decided to do something to help the school.

He said due to the break-in, the school had to close for three weeks.

“I asked a friend, Dion Ramoo if we could help with a fundraising event.

“We then decided to do a musical show. Performing on the show is the Jeodhouse Band led by top South Africam musician, Devanish Hendricks from Cape Town,” he said.

Kops said Hendricks has played the keyboard for The Rockets for eight years.

“Jeodhouse plays R&B, house music and just about anything the crowd demands,” he said.

Kops said the highlight of the event would be the performance of Petersen and Groenewald. “This promises to be a good musical show with amazing, talented musicians lined-up,” said Kops.
