Fitness guru lands online radio station gig

- By QAQAMBA MAGADLA

EAST London fitness guru Singwa Silinga, who runs the well-known “Hercules Bootcamp” will host his own show on online radio station Keith Ngesi Radio (KNR).

Silinga, who has changed the lives of many people struggling with obesity, will start his show early next year.

He plans on speaking to some big names in the fitness industry on health and fitness matters.

The University of Fort Hare BCom law graduate said he became a gym junkie back in 2006 when he was introduced to weight training.

Silinga said he only considered becoming a fitness instructor when a group of friends at a braai requested him to train them.

“I thought it was a joke. There were about 10 people at that braai and they were all willing to subject themselves to my supervision.

“I had never trained an actual group before but I was like why not. After the weekend I got a call from a friend at the braai to ask me when we would start the ‘bootcamp’.”

He researched information on how to conduct a bootcamp and then pitched the plan to his friends who helped with donations for the equipment he needed.

He started training his friends for a fee of R400 a month but soon started getting calls from strangers wanting to join.

He called on his friend Sandisiwe Dywili, a qualified trainer to assist him and together with 25 new members, the Hercules Bootcamp started.

Initially operating from his house, at the beach and James Pearce Park in Stirling, the concept worked so well that people started losing weight and were happy with their results.

Keith Ngesi, who started the online station, joined in the second season of the bootcamp.

He said Silinga had been a weekly feature on the station but due to the high interest levels in fitness and health topics, decided to give him his own show that will broadcast daily for an hour.

“We don’t want people to do anything different from the lives they are living, Singwa’s show will focus on what he is doing right now,” said Ngesi.

“He runs a bootcamp and he is all about fitness. There is definitely a need for such content for our listeners.” — qaqambam@dispatch.co.za
