Array of sport on cards

- By ROSS ROCHE

A FULL day of sporting action is on the cards near Cofimvaba on Friday as an exciting sport festival will be played in the Mtingwevu area.

A 5km fun run will be held while soccer, netball, indigenous games and traditional dances will just be some of the activities on show on the day.

“We are holding this festival as a celebration for Reconciliation Day and also the fact that this is the month that there is activism for no violence against women and children, so we decided to incorporate that into the festival,” event organiser Jongikhaya Dudumashe said.

This is the first time that this festival is being held in the area. However, a Heritage festival was hosted in September with a similar theme and Dudumashe is hopeful that both festivals will become annual events.

“Our festival in September was a great success and I expect this one to be as well,” said Dudumashe.

The festival will take place in Ward 19 and 10 villages will participate.

Two hundred athletes are expected to be involved in the sport on the day, while all the communities are encouraged to get out and support the day.

“We expect all of the communities to come and take part in the fun run and we hope that they will all be supporting the other sporting activities on the day,” said Dudumashe.

After this Friday’s festival Dudumashe hopes the exposure will help him get investors for future events so that they can continue and grow.

“We are hoping that next year when we go to companies to help us they will have a better understanding of what we are doing and that they will come on board and help us grow and improve these events,” said Dudumashe.

The day’s action will get under way with the fun run at 7am, while the rest of the sporting activities will start from 9am.
