Babes hits back by shifting the blame

- By MALIBONGWE DAYIMANI

DANCE music sensation Babes Wodumo, who is fast becoming known for pulling no shows and allegedly stealing other artists’ songs, has shifted the blame to her ex-manager.

She has accused her former manager Victor Mdlokoloof of overbooking her and taking her money.

The Wololo hitmaker has been in the news for all the wrong reasons since the festive season started.

She started by missing scheduled interviews on Metro FM’s First Avenue breakfast show and Ukhozi FM before she delivered a lifeless performance at the Pan African Buyel’Ekhaya festival.

She blamed Buyel’Ekhaya organiser Hlubi Mazwai for her boring performance, claiming Mazwai had threatened to kill her backstage.

Mazwai has since threatened to take legal action against Babes as a result.

The singer has also been accused of stealing an East London DJ’s song, and, in her latest mishap, she failed to pitch for a gig in Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

The Queen on Gqom music, as she is known, took to Instagram to apologise to her Zim fans, claiming she had missed her flight from East London because of her busy schedule.

In the video, she promised to arrange another date where she would wow those who had waited for her in Bulawayo.

However, Babes, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, 23, changed her tune on Thursday when speaking to the Saturday Dispatch, and accused Mdlokolo of making a mess of her performance bookings.

“I didn’t get to go and perform in Zimbabwe because I have been overbooked by the previous manager because he was cashing in on my gigs too by making clients pay to his account instead of that of the company. I subsequently missed my flight because of fatigue,” she said.

The singer said because she did not want to disappoint her fans, she ended up taking more gigs than she could handle.

Speaking about Mdlokolo, Babes’ new manager Melody Mhlongo said: “The bookings that he had done created chaos so most gigs clashed.”

However, Mdlokolo laughed off the allegations against him.

“I don’t have a comment because actually this is rubbish.” — malibongwed@dis patch.co.za
