Anger over rubbish at EL beaches

Unsightly items, bad smells upset many

-

Alius Bali from Mdantsane said he wished there was more parking space at Gonubie Beach, and more cleaners to keep the place clean.

“BCM needs to clear these bushes for parking, and also fix the drainage system and remove the sand from the parking space.

“Our beaches are way behind ... those like Monwabisi Beach in the Western Cape and Ushaka Marine in Durban.”

Bali said safety, poor lighting and a lack of refuse bins were cause for concern at all beaches.

“There are no proper ablution facilities at Eastern Beach. At least here [Gonubie] there are toilets, and privacy is also available because they have lockable doors. However, the lights do not seem to work here, so at night you fear for your life.

“Eastern Beach is a big ‘no’ for me and my family … filthy and unsafe.”

Not all revellers, however, were put off by the state of the beaches. Lusanda Samuel, 28, and her family from Phumlani village said they had hired a taxi to take them to the beach.

“We are a group of 13 in total with five adults and eight kids. We are here to have a braai and have fun with the children.”

Buffalo City College student Vuyiswa Williams, 25, said her group of six had booked two rooms at a Bunkers Hill B&B.

“We come from different towns ... on the 1st we went to the beach and later to eBuhlanti to have a round of drinks.” —
