Mom abandons baby at break-in

- By QAQAMBA MAGADLA

CAMBRIDGE police have arrested a woman for child abuse, housebreaking and theft, after she broke into her boyfriend’s house and left her child there all night.

SAPS Captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed that police had arrested the woman and she would appear in court today for housebreaking and theft.

The father of the baby, who is not being named to protect the identity of the child, said he had gone out with friends on December 31 and arrived at 5am to find the door latch to his flat broken.

He discovered their one-yearold baby sleeping on his bed.

The man claimed the woman also punctured the wheels of his car, stole clothing, cellular SIM cards and sunglasses.

“When I got inside the gate I realised the wheel of the car was flat. I went closer to the car and saw that all of the wheels had been actually punctured.

“When I rushed to my flat, I found the door latch had been broken. I opened the door to find the child had been left on my bed,” he said.

He says he immediately suspected that the baby’s mother had left the child there.

He went to the Cambridge police station and opened a case against her.

He claimed that although they had broken up a long time ago, she had started acting “funny” after she heard he had another girlfriend.

He said the following day after finding his child on his bed, the woman returned to claim the baby but he refused to give her the baby.

He informed her that he had opened a case against her and called the police who then came to arrest her.

“I told her I would not hand over the baby because she had clearly thrown the child away. She has never done this before,” he said. —
