Jailed killer accused of stealing fuel and other prison goods

- By MALIBONGWE DAYIMANI

A NOTORIOUS inmate serving a 12-year sentence at Stutterheim Prison for murder is facing fresh charges after he allegedly stole goods including fuel from the prison stores.

Anele Windvoel, 29, appeared in the Stutterheim Magistrate’s Court on Thursday over charges of stolen property, housebreaking and theft.

Windvoel, from Mlungisi Township in Stutterheim, and a 40-year-old woman were arrested at 8pm on Thursday.

The woman, who may not be named, is the owner of the house where the goods were found. She was released on warning.

King William’s Town police spokeswoman Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said the arrest came after police were tipped off about a house in Kubusi Township possibly storing stolen property. Mawisa said how the inmate managed to steal and transport the goods out of the prison is still the subject of a police investigation.

The Stutterheim Correctional Centre is several kilometres from Kubusi Township.

“Police received information about the house that kept goods that were stolen from the prison stores on January 16 and 17.”

Mawisa said the police recovered some of the goods, worth R10 000, from the house.

The two suspects will appear again at the same court on February 1.

King William’s Town police cluster acting commander, Captain Makhaya Tukwayo, encouraged the public to report criminal activities to the police on Crime Stop 08600-10111, Crime Line 32211 or their nearest police station. — malibongwed@dispatch. co.za
