Old Boys sneak past Alfa in humdinger

- By MAUD THORNE Southampton v Arsenal

THE Jekyll & Hyde summer series being played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Beacon Bay Tennis Club has provided spectators with exciting, hard-hitting tennis.

The most closely contested tie thus far was that in which Old Boys sneaked past Alfa in a humdinger with fortunes fluctuating in every encounter.

Both the men’s and women’s doubles matches ended in exciting tiebreakers with Old Boys shoe-horning their way through by one point in each case.

Lindsay Jakobi and welcome newcomer, Greg Keyter, squeezed past Tony Brits and Lester Barkhuysen by one point, while Jenny Milne and Lorna Grotjohn did the same to Kim O’Leary and Joy Brits.

Keyter teamed up with Milne to beat Brits and O’Leary 8-6 and it was left to Barkhuysen and Joy Brits to bring in a point for Alfa as they shoe-horned their way past the Jakobi-Grotjohn pairing.

The team of Avela Ndlabhu, Sithembele Gogo, Carol Brink and Sisanda Bacela brought in Destiny’s first win when they defeated a game Stirling side of Mike Kapp, Denzil Weiss, Michelle Pratt and Carol Oberem.

Destiny had earlier in the week gone down to the strong Beacon Bay B team of Robert Bell, Grant Stuart, Cherie Biggs and Lynne Green, while the experienced Old Boys side had beaten Stirling.

On Tuesday Old Boys meet Destiny while the two Beacon Bay sides do battle while on Thursday the first and second Beacon Bay sides meet Stirling and Alfa respectively. 0431 0930 1420 1645 1915 Rugby: World HSBC Sevens Series, Wellington: South Africa v Australia Cricket: South Africa v Sri Lanka 1st ODI Soccer: Liverpool v Wolverhampton Wanderers Soccer: Chelsea v Brentford Soccer:
