Bees need all their sting for Tornado

- By MKHULULI NDAMASE

BHISHO side EC Bees maintained their unbeaten record in the ABC Motsepe League when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Lion City at the weekend.

However, their draw meant they had to drop down to second place on the log with Future Tigers, who have played a game more, occupying position one with 42 points.

Last weekend turned out to be a round of draws as the majority of teams shared spoils. It was Tornado that pulled a SuperSport United on Orlando Pirates when they thumped Walter Sisulu University 6-1.

Future Tigers were equally devastating against FC Buffalo, humiliating them 4-0 while Mighty Bucks beat Callies 2-0.

The impressive Bees will have a chance to reclaim position one which they held until last weekend when they were overtaken by Tigers.

Bees will square off with fifth-placed Tornado at the Bhisho Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) in the pick of the weekend’s game.

On paper, Bees, who are the only side yet to lose this season, are favourites to get maximum points as they have a slight edge over Tornado.

But the 6-1 demolishing of WSU last weekend will do a world of good for the team as they will need to be highly motivated if they are to be the first team to sting the Bees.

Tigers should have an easy day at the office against struggling Young Ideas at the NU2 in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth on Friday (kick-off 7pm).

If Tigers pip Ideas as they should easily do, they will tighten their grip at the summit of the log despite the outcome of the Bees and Tornado game.

Tigers have scored the highest number of goals this season while their opponents have the worst defensive record so far.

The visitors should pile more misery on the Motherwell club if recent form is anything to go by.

At the North End Stadium, FC Buffalo will welcome Mthatha City.

The East London team will be eager to move up the log and bounce back from last weekend’s 4-0 drubbing from Tigers.

They will have to show real character or else City, third on the log will collect all three points and remain in their current position with 37 points.

In a Port Elizabeth derby, bottom of the log Morning Stars will have a mountain to climb against fourth-placed Lion City at Zwide Stadium at 6pm on Friday.

WSU will entertain Swartkops Valley United Brothers in Butterworth in what should be an interesting game at 3pm on Saturday.

In the battle of the teams in the top eight, Matatiele Professionals will meet Callies FC at Thandanani Stadium in Matatiele.

Professionals will be looking to close the gap between them and Callies and playing at home should give them an added advantage.

But advantage alone will not help them if they do not bring their A-game.

Mdantsane Mighty Bucks will travel to Dutywa to lock horns with Matta Milan on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

The 2-0 win last week against Callies will have the players believing they can start grinding the results and moving away from the bottom half of the table. Highbury FC will play against City Lads FC at Gelvandale Stadium at 6pm on Friday.
