Robin Hood the not so very good

Stirling to stage ‘new’ old classic

- By POLISWA PLAATJIE

STIRLING High School is “moving” to Sherwood Forest next week as the cast of the school’s latest stage show retells the classic story of Robin Hood.

The Heart of Robin Hood, a newer version of the story written by David Farr in 2011, will take centre stage from next Tuesday to Saturday in the school hall.

Farr’s story sees Robin Hood and his band of outlaws steal from the rich, creating a fearsome reputation among those who dare to travel through Sherwood forest.

However, in Farr’s version they do not share their spoils with the poor and are unloved by the people, who must also pay unfair taxes to the evil Prince John as he plots to steal his brother’s crown.

In this time of chaos and fear, it is down to Marion to boldly protect the poor and convince Robin that he must listen to his heart if they are to save the country.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch this week, Stirling High School drama teacher Marc Williams said he had the honour of watching the production in 2011 at Stratford in England during its premiere.

“It was showing at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and it was really special for me because two of my friends were part of the production. It is such a joy for us as the school to be bringing this production to our community.”

He said the script was witty and one of the greatest things in the production was the set.

“The play tells the story from Marion’s point of view, with some interesting twists and witty character additions.”

Traditional characters seen in the show include Marion, played by Laura-Jean Runchman, and Robin Hood, played by Ethan Petzer. Little John is played by Neil Ludik, while Will Scathlock and Much Miller will be played by Daniel Lottering and Reef Funston respectively.

Williams said there were a couple of twists to the story that the audience would enjoy.

“A new addition to the story is the very witty and quite pantomime-like character of Pierre, played by Daniel Anderson.

“He is like Marion’s sidekick. We have kept to the original script and we have made as much as we can of the lighter moments,” he said.

Williams said the production had been well received by the pupils.

“The response from them has been phenomenal, they absolutely love the script and we are busy polishing what we have already.”

● The Heart of Robin Hood runs from Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm. There will also be a matinée on Saturday at 2pm. Tickets are R50 for pensioners and scholars and R80 for adults, and are available from the school office.
