Old Boys are kings yet again

- By MAUD THORNE

OLD Boys retained the men’s first league tennis trophy when they beat Beacon Bay 3-2 in the final round of the East London league.

Sam Townes set Old Boys on the way to victory when he defeated Dylan Smith 6-1, 6-3 in the opening encounter which saw the players match each other shot for shot.

Playing in the top spot, Ryan Little showed great tenacity when he came from behind in the first set of his match against the tall Bernard de Boer to clinch an evenly-contested set on a tiebreaker. Spurred on by this recovery, Little captured the second set at 6-2 to give his side a convincing lead.

Robert Bell and Willie Marais stopped the Old Boys flow briefly when they squeezed past the Shaun Mathie/Jason Bezuidenhout pairing at 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.

De Boer and Smith made amends for their singles defeats by registering a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mathie and Bezuidenhout to level matches.

Townes and Little combined to give Old Boys a welldeserved victory when they beat Bell and Marais 6-3, 6-4.

The women’s first league is being played on a roundrobin basis.

The Prince team of ArlienMyburgh, Cherie Biggs, Cindy Taylor and Kim O’Leary proved too strong for Head, represented by Lizelle Botha, Hanlie Dodd, Sheila Smith and Lynne Green.

Prince players were in sparkling form going through the afternoon without the loss of a match to register a convincing 51-18 win in games.

The most closely contested fixture of the afternoon occurred in the men’s second league where Omega, represented by Angelo del Fava, Selwyn Collins, Joseph Ramoo and Claude Moonieyan drew in matches, sets and games with Oliver Ciganek, Nicolai Hensberg, Ray Mandy and Dave Bartlett of Old Boys.
