Sanco head in EC to quell tensions

AFTER years of infighting and court battles, the South African National Civic Organisation says it is on the road to organisational healing.

This as the organisation’s national office bearers, led by its president Richard Mdakana, visited the Eastern Cape in an effort to quell tensions and battles between factions.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Sanco’s provincial chairman in the Eastern Cape, Zukile Luyenge, said the troubled organisation had to adopt new guidelines in order to restore its dignity going into the provincial conference in November.

“During the weekend visit the president [Mdakana] re-confirmed the provincial leadership that was elected at the Walter Sisulu Unive Zamukulungisa campus in Mthatha in 2013.

“The leadership also outlined the new guidelines that are [to be foll when restructuring our branches, regions and zones,” said Luyenge.

The party’s factional battles in the province started to show when the 2013 PEC broke away and started to lead parallel structures within the party.

In Buffalo City Metro, the organisation had three parallel structures – one led by then deputy chairman Joel Matshoba, the other led by Luyenge, while a third splinter group was led by current PEC member Daluxolo Ntside, who was elected together with Luyenge.

Luyenge said the province would also undergo an audit process to verify the organisation’s members and to look at its assets, including finances collected from members.

“During the time that we were leading parallel groups we collected money from members.

“Those monies must now be accounted for and we want to follow a transparent process in doing that,” said Luyenge.

The organisation is set to elect its new provincial leadership in November when the current term ends in October.

“All of our energies should be focused on ensuring that we build structures of the civic movement in the province and to ensure that no branch is left behind when we finally hold our provincial conference in November,” Luyenge said. —
