SuperSport still dominant after 1-1 draw

- By TIYANI WA KA MABASA

SUPERSPORT United may have dropped two points in their 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium, but they can still celebrate.

Matsatsantsa looked on course for victory after taking the lead through Thabo Mnyamane 10 minutes into the second half, but they were denied maximum points when Bucs winger Thembinkosi Lorch levelled matters for the hosts with 14 minutes remaining.

So what’s there to celebrate for SuperSport in a draw? Well, they have matched the longest unbeaten league run in a PSL season – 19 league games set by Kaizer Chiefs in 2014-15.

And guess what? Current SuperSport coach Baxter was in charge of Chiefs when they won the league in his last season with Amakhosi.

If SuperSport can avoid defeat in their next league match – which is at home against bottom side Baroka on April 2 – they will set a new record.

Pirates, embarrassingly, have now gone 11 league matches without a win (or 12 in all competitions if you include their 1-0 Telkom Knockout loss – also against SuperSport late last year).

The clash last night was a painful reminder for the Bucs of their 6-1 defeat to SuperSport in November, and 10 minutes into the second half it looked like more pain. Then, in the 76th minute Lorch saved their blushes.

The first half was nothing to write home about, with both teams struggling to create opportunities, but the second half was a different ball game as Mnyamane and Lorch took their chances and found the back of the net.

SuperSport had a penalty appeal turned down when Jeremy Brockie appeared to be brought down in the box by Ayanda Gcaba. Tendai Ndoro could have given Pirates victory at the death, but headed over the bar from close range after a cross by Mpho Makola.

SuperSport remain third on the log, while Pirates are in 10th spot.
