Kings must lock the backdoor in Shark tank

- By GEORGE BYRON

SOUTHERN Kings skipper Schalk Ferreira wants sharper defence against attacks from broken play when his team play the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

Disappointed after his team went down 41-10 against the Stormers, Ferreira wants his men to be more vigilant against the Sharks.

The Kings leaked six tries against the Stormers and it is clearly an area of concern.

“I do not think it is our defence from setpiece play. We have to work harder on broken play defence and it was the same as in the Jaguares match.

“We are on the opposition tryline and they make a turnover and they go and score. It is broken play defence we must work on because I do not feel pressured with our setpiece defence.”

Kings head coach Deon Davids says his team need to show much more patience.

“We need to look at ourselves honestly and say to ourselves we must use our opportunities better and be more patient and make better decisions at vital times,” said Davids.

“I understand it is a young team and there are one or two areas where we are not gelling yet. I believe as the season goes on we will get better.

“It is about executing your plans. When we executed we created good opportunities. Then at times we got impatient or had a skill error and we paid for it.”

Sharks assistant coach Sean Everitt has hinted that his team will use a rotational policy this weekend.

“We do have injuries this weekend, but at some stage we do have to rest our Springboks so the plan was always to rest them this weekend anyway,” he said.

“Certainly not because we’re underestimating the Kings, but because of the games we have ahead of us which will then take us into the bye.

Looking at this past weekend’s match between the Stormers and Kings as a yardstick by which to judge the Kings, Everitt warned that they are going to be a tough prospect.

“They are a team on the rise. They had a slow start but they have some old heads.

“Lionel Cronje is playing some good rugby and they’re obviously relying on him to direct the traffic.

“They were in the game against the Stormers this weekend until about the last 10 minutes. The Stormers were under pressure and we certainly won’t be underestimating them.”

The Kings will name their team to face the Sharks today.

Centre Luzuko Vulindlu, who sustained a concussion against the Stormers, is the only casualty from last weekend’s match.

The 29-year-old will go through the normal concussion protocol which requires a compulsory one week’s rest.

However, lock Mzwanele Zito and scrumhalf Louis Schreuder are back at training this week.

They sustained concussions against the Sunwolves in Singapore and will likely be available for selection this week should they get through their return to play protocol.
