Gandhi Walk set to get into its stride

- By ROSS ROCHE

THE highly popular annual Gandhi Walk is ready for its next take-off as it takes place from Oxford Striders in Nahoon next week Sunday.

The ever-growing event has for the past 10 years been held towards the end of October, however this year sees a date change for the first time with it moving up to the end of March.

“Towards the end of the year the East London Hindu Society has a busy religious calendar, so in consultation with Oxford Striders running club, we therefore decided to move the Gandhi walk to the first quarter of the year,” explained organiser Ashwin Soma.

“Before when we first started hosting this event it was a lot smaller and more manageable during the busy time, however with it continuing to grow each year and with us having to cater for so many entries it was decided that holding the walk now would be the best course of action.”

The walk drew close to 2 000 participants last year, haven risen from just over a thousand in 2015 and it will be aiming to break the 2 000person mark in the coming years.

“The fun walk has developed over the years and grown to over 1 800 participants due to the unyielding commitment of the participants,” claimed Soma.

“There could be a slight drop in participation due to the date change this year, but we expect numbers to start increasing again as we build momentum going forward.

“From now on we are aiming for the walk to be held on the last Sunday of March each year and we believe with it being a less busy time and a staple on the Border Athletics calendar, it will continue to be as successful as it has been over the last few years.”

Each year the Gandhi Walk looks to assist an organisation and this year the Breath of Life – Place of Safety organisation was chosen.

All entrants will get a free meal and there will be lucky draw prizes up for grabs after the walk.

Tickets cost R50 to enter and can be bought at Sportsmans Warehouse Retail Park, Hair by Gino Oriental Plaza, Total Sports Vincent Park, Bilimoria Fishing Tackle Beacon Bay, Friesland Milk Bar Hemingways, Cinnamon Stick Stirling, AV Supermarket Braelyn Heights and the Breath of Life Centre.

The walk will get under way at 10am on Sunday March 26.
