Exciting talent on show at Selborne
A FANTASTIC day of Border Schools action was on show at Selborne College on Saturday as the annual Border Schools Rugby day was battled out.
A total of 28 teams from 26 different schools played in 14 matches across two fields during the day, with some very entertaining matches being played.
In the day’s final match Selborne claimed a 24-3 win over Hudson Park High to get their season off to an excellent start.
“It was an exciting final match,” said deputy chairperson of Border High Schools rugby, Mthobeli Kweliti.
“Despite the score it was a close game and both teams were very competitive.”
In the match Hudson got off to a good start with early play in Selborne’s half. However, the hosts soon took charge as an exciting break down the right hand touchline saw some great interplay between the backs ending with wing Jordan Janse van Rensburg crash over in the right-hand corner for an unconverted try.
A powerful driving maul from a line out in Hudson’s 22m in the 14th minute saw Selborne score again, with Mark Venter dotting down, but flyhalf Jason Raubenheimer missed the conversion.
Three minutes later Hudson got on the board through a penalty in front after an infringement at the breakdown, with Jared du Plessis making no mistake.
This brought the score to 10-3.
The second half saw Selborne add to their lead through tries from Sibabalwe Xamlashe and Afika Ndinisa, with Raubenheimer slotting both to seal a good win for the hosts.
It was, however, a scrappy game, with both teams showing a bit of rust, but both should be happy to have got a decent run out and will know what to build on heading towards their respective Easter tournaments.
“I am very happy with how the day went. The turn-out was so good and the spectators got to see some great rugby as the boys showcased their talents,” said Kweliti.
“I think the players have shown the Border selectors what they are capable of and I think they won’t have a problem choosing the Border teams later in the half-time
