‘Terrorist’ incident in London
A WOMAN was been pulled from the River Thames alive after yesterday’s attack on a bridge near Britain’s parliament in Westminster, the Port of London Authority (PLA) said, adding she was being treated for serious injuries.
“A female member of the public was pulled from the water near Westminster Bridge, alive, with serious injuries,” a PLA spokesman told reporters.
He added that the river had been closed to all non-emergency traffic in the immediate area.
The London Ambulance Service said it had treated at least 10 people after the attack that police described as a terrorist incident.
“We can confirm we have treated at least 10 patients on Westminster Bridge and have put a number of hospitals on alert as we continue to respond to this incident,” said London Ambulance Service Deputy Director of Operations Pauline Cranmer in a statement.
In the incident, an assailant stabbed a policeman and was shot by police just outside the parliament building.
Amid confusing scenes, it appeared the incident may have unfolded in several locations, including on the nearby Westminster bridge where eyewitnesses said a car had crashed into pedestrians.
Two people died in the incident, according to Sky News, but the total number of casualties was unclear.
The incident took place on the first anniversary of attacks by Islamist militants that killed 32 people in Brussels.
Reporters inside the parliament building heard loud bangs and shortly afterwards saw two people lying on the ground in a courtyard just outside, within the perimeter of the parliamentary estate. — Reuters
