Bees get their wings clipped in ambush

WALTER Sisulu University stunned E C Bees 2-1 to send the Bhisho team crashing down to earth in their ABC Motsepe League game at the Bhisho Stadium at the weekend.

This was Bees’ first game after losing 3-1 to Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup round of 32.

Bees were expected to easily put the students to the sword, but the visitors had other ideas in mind.

This was Bees’ chance to close the gap between them and log-leaders Future Tigers, who dropped two points against City Lads in Ginsberg on Saturday.

Now, Tigers are five points clear at the summit of the log-standings.

Bees were their own enemies as they failed to convert the host of chances that they created.

The team’s leading goalscorer Bongani Chikila, who scored against the experienced Soweto giants, found himself one-on-one with the keeper twice in the first half but failed to score.

This had some fans believing Bees were still fatigued from their Pirates game.

Bees, however, took the lead in the 15th minute when Siyabonga “Raiza” Booi took advantage of poor defending.

The goal seemed to open up play as the tempo of the game increased but Bees maintaned control of the game.

WSU midfielder Rosisang Setlobong fired his side back in the game against the run of play in the 35th minute.

In the second half, both sides tried to assert their dominance but lacked the killer touch.

The Butterworth-based outfit stole the win 17 minutes before the end of the game with a Siyanda Damoyi goal.

Smelling the victory, WSU parked the bus and started with time-wasting tactics.

Bees threw everything at the visitors in search of the equaliser but the students stood their ground for their win and Bees’ second loss of the season.

WSU team manager Lufefe Duba said the Pirates game helped them to prepare for Bees.

“We realised that their left and right-back lack pace so we planned to exploit that,” he said.

Bees coach Chippa Njedu said the game was not theirs to win.

“I don’t know what happened created so many chances.

“We were supposed to win the game by three or four goals,” he said.
