Local sides in fierce duel for national prize

The East London regionals will be battled out at Police Park today from 10am.

A whole host of teams will be going all out to win the regional leg including the likes of Sikwanda Wine and Dine, AMG Meat Fire Beer and Magaba’s Place who will be involved and many more.

In all 136 tavern teams around Mzansi are vying to be crowned the winners of the 2017 Smirnoff Raga Bolo Championsh­ip to score the R150 000 grand prize.

The competitio­n got under way on March 18 in Tembisa and has seen subsequent regionals played in Soweto, Kwamashu and Port Elizabeth.

The spotlight now turns to East London and some fierce action should be on show.

The 14 regions taking part are Soweto, Tembisa, Soshanguve, Katlehong, Bloemfonte­in, Rustenburg, Nelspruit, Polokwane, East London, Port Elizabeth, Umlazi, Pietermari­tzburg, Kwa-Mashu and Khayelitsh­a.

Teams will compete for the top spots in their regions and the best 66 will then face off within their respective provinces in the provincial league, with the matches taking place in the Western Cape on May 20.

The top 14 teams that triumph in these will then head to Gauteng to take part in the national final on July 1.

“Between March and July these teams will be repping their kasis and everyone’s invited to come and cheer them on,” said marketing manager for Smirnoff 1818, Kyle Lesch. The action gets under way at 10am today. Fans can check the 1818 clubhouse Facebook page for updates on whether their tavern team has been selected or not.
