Combrink and Reece to bring tour to City

- By POLISWA PLAATJIE

FROM topping music charts to touring around the country, singers Howie Combrink and Stuart Reece are making their way to East London this weekend for their coastal tour.

Touring together for the first time, the duo will bring their signature blend of storytelling acoustic vibes, and will each play a set of their own tunes.

On Saturday they are scheduled to perform at Legends Showcase in Berea and at the C-Club in Chintsa on Sunday.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Combrink said he could not wait to return to the city.

“The last time I was in East London was last year around this time when I did a show with Michael Lowman.”

Combrink said the tour has been well received in Cape Town when they performed there last weekend.

“We had a lot of fun and the show was really amazing. We can’t wait for East London.”

Combrink’s latest single, Believe, is currently in number one position on the 5FM pop charts.

“When I release a song, I don’t like having expectations because you never know how it’s going to be received. However, the response has been amazing and I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

The song features on the compilation album of the non-profit company Rada (Rape, Alcohol, Drug and Abuse) Healing.

The project was not only aimed at raising awareness for Rada Healing, but through the music, bring a message of hope and restoration.

The 18-track album includes the likes of Prime Circle, Ashlinn Gray, Lelo, Lira and Michael Lowman.

Combrink said he was honoured to have been one of the musicians selected to take part in the project. “Believe is a song I wrote about my observations of people’s lives. I think a lot of people need to believe in themselves a little more.

“The world is our playground and it’s important to take advantage of everything life has to offer. Believe this world is yours.”

Since mastering the drums and the guitar in his pre-teen and teen years, Combrink has played with many different bands, starting with Mel-Funktion and including Gang of Instrumentals, Chili and Lime, Soil 7t7 and One Day Remains.

He was also a member of the South African Music Awards-nominated band called The New Academics and still works with former member David Baudains.

At the end of 2009, Combrink broadened his performing experience, playing drums and providing tuned percussion for several theatre shows, including The Boys in the Photograph and Dreamgirls .

In early 2012, Combrink joined multiplatinum-selling band Watershed.

Now riding solo, Combrink’s debut album, Eat It While It’s Hot, saw him receive his first Sama nominations last year for the best newcomer and best adult contemporary album.
