Legal threats may halt UFH student elections
STUDENT representative council (SRC) elections scheduled for tomorrow at the University of Fort Hare might not take place.
Democratic Alliance Student Organisation (Daso) and EFF Student Command have indicated they might take a legal route to interdict the elections.
Both organisations were disqualified by the provincial Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for missing the deadline to submit their candidate lists.
Daso missed the deadline at the university’s Alice campus, while the EFFSC missed the deadline at the East London campus.
The national ANC Youth League leadership has also instructed the IEC not to allow the ANCYL at the university to contest.
ANCYL’s UFH chairman in East London, Banzi Nkitha, said they would not to comment in the media, “until we are sure of the route we will take regarding the matter”.
Daso’s constituency leader in the Eastern Cape, Hlomela Bucwa, said they were still talking to the national leadership.
“We exhausted all the avenues at our disposal, but if it all fails there is a possibility of approaching the court to interdict the elections,” she said.
EFFSC secretary general Phiwaba Madokwe said they might interdict the elections if talks failed.
“I cannot comment much on the matter at the moment, but legal route will be the only option left if we are prevented from contesting the elections,” she said.
