Sanco in project to relaunch regions

- By ZINGISA MVUMVU

THE South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in the Eastern Cape has started relaunching its regions, starting with Buffalo City which held its elective congress at the weekend.

At the conference Bantwini Deliwe emerged as regional chairman and Isaac Platjies as regional secretary.

Sanco provincial leader Zukile Luyenge, said the election of the new Buffalo City leadership was the beginning of the civic organisation’s bid at rebuilding defunct structures in the province.

He said the need to rebuild emanated from several Sanco parallel structures operating throughout the province. This had led to the organisation, which is in an alliance with the ruling ANC, Cosatu and SACP, failing to partake in its mandate of servicing communities.

However, following a recent visit by Sanco national president Richard Mdakane in Bhisho, it was resolved that a rebuilding process was long overdue. “In the meeting with our national president, it was resolved that for Sanco to be able to assist communities on issues of service delivery and other issues, we need to do so as a united front,” said Luyenge.

“Therefore, a united front can only be forged if we have strong and stable structures speaking in one voice rather than parallel structures.”

Up next is the Sarah Baartman region on April 22, followed by Nelson Mandela Bay and then Amathole, Joe Gqabi, Alfred Nzo, Chris Hani with O R Tambo scheduled to be the last on June 3.

“Once we have stable structures we will then be able to guide society on issues such as social ills, service delivery, economic issues and the scourge of corruption.” —
