Date set for building in Bhisho precinct
CONSTRUCTION of the multibillionrand Bhisho office precinct is expected to begin in November.
This comes almost a year after Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle gave the go-ahead for the roll-out of phase two of the much talked about project.
Public works spokesman Mpumzi Zuzile said the department estimated that the bidding process would be concluded soon.
“Our timeline indicates that the construction may commence in November. The department hopes to conclude the bidding process at the end of September and we are making a provision for a period for objections,” he said.
This week, the provincial roads and public works department requested proposals for the development of the precinct.
The offices will accommodate seven government departments which will include economic development and environment affairs, rural development and agrarian reform, social development, transport, human settlements, safety and liaison and sport, recreation, arts and culture.
Although the public works department has refused to confirm how much will be spent on the project, it is believed government is looking at an estimated R2.5-billion.
In the advert, which appeared in the Daily Dispatch this week, the department said bidders had to submit their proposals by August 17.
The precinct will be adjacent to the House of Traditional Leaders and will cover a 60 000m² area.
A second piece of land of approximately 200 000m² will be used for parking.
The new development comes amid strong criticism that the government spends millions of rands in leasing office space that is at times not up to standard instead of renovating or building their own offices. —
