Mabuyane one of our own

-

I WRITE in response to fallacious, misguided letter “Masualle must continue” (DD, May 3).

This crazy attention seeking writer exposes his lack of understanding for the operations of our glorious movement. Desperate individuals seek to plough division and create a leadership ceiling for young and vibrant leaders in the Eastern Cape.

As for the reference to comrade Soweto Mabuyane as an “Ngcobo Boy”, he was indeed proudly born in the rural village of Deberha at Ngcobo, but such attempted contextualising is illdiscipline hell-bent on undermining the sterling maturity that Lubabalo Mabuyane bestows.

Such utterances are uncalled for and totally out of line with our African values of respecting our seniors. The ANC from inception has never been a dictatorial movement and has always allowed contestation for all positions in a democratic and disciplined way. As we approach our provincial conference, disciplined rank and file of the ANC can never remain silent when negative and atrocious insinuations are cast about our own leaders, implanting divisions within our movement.

Branches of the ANC are the ones that will decide who will lead us post-provincial conference. The campaign against Mabuyane must know that every member in good standing as guided by ANC constitution can be elected to any position including that of provincial chair.

This includes Mabuyane who has, since his early days, been involved in ANC activities. He was one of the youngest branch secretaries serving in the Zilimbola branch in 1996 and subsequently a branch delegate in Mafikeng.

We know of his sterling contribution to the student movement especially Sasco and as a member of SRC at the University of Fort Hare.

His commitment in the struggle for the betterment of our people was strongly noticed in his time as deputy chair of the ANC Youth League which led to his election as one of the youngest provincial secretaries of the ANC since 2009.

Under his guidance as provincial secretary that ANC resolutions in this province have been implemented. I know he would never make personal claims for credit as some leaders do these days.

Personally I know him as a firm leader who does not run away from responsibility. He believes in collective leadership, is very humble and wellgrounded in the grassroots. Mabuyane is one of our own. — Zibele Xuba, Queenstown
