Selborne will be a force at home in big derby

- By ROSS ROCHE

CRACKING derby rugby action is on the cards today as school teams do battle across the Border region.

Some top derbies will be fought out, with the pick of the bunch, arguably the all-College clash between Selborne and Queen’s College.

Hudson Park will host Kingswood, Dale College welcome Stirling, Cambridge take on Port Rex and Grens travel to Framesby in other matches.

Selborne should be the more confident in their clash with Queen’s College at home. Selborne have won five and lost three games so far, while their opponents have won three and lost five.

However, Selborne head into the game fresh from two losses at the Wildeklawer festival, going down 33-16 to Paarl Boys’ High and 28-5 to Helpmekaar.

Queen’s College, on the other hand, also head into the game off a loss at the Grey High festival, where they went down to St Johns 13-7, but they will take heart from their 25-24 win over Dale two weeks ago, that could help them in their bid to claim an upset win over Selborne.

Adding to the day’s festivities, Selborne, in conjunction with managing member of Biztec, Peter John McLoughlin, are doing a fund-raiser for the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC), during the derby day.

The initiative known as “Selborne Scrums Cancer”, will see special pink caps and the Selborne “rugby dog” on sale at the gate, with all proceeds going to CHOC.

Another big match sees Hudson Park hosting Kingswood College at Hudson Park and they will hope that homeground advantage will give them the edge, as they come into the match off a 24-5 loss against Brandwag at the Grey High festival.

Kingswood, however, have also struggled this season. After winning their first two games, they lost the next four, so it should be a closely contested affair.

The much-improved Stirling rugby team will be aiming for a big performance when they dobattle with Dale in King William’s Town. It will be a tough ask for Stirling to try and claim an upset win, but they will look to give it their all.

Dale had a patchy start to the season with two wins, a draw and three losses in their first six games of the season, but they have built some momentum after beating Daniel Pienaar and Pearson at the Grey High festival.

Cambridge and Port Rex will be a very interesting match-up, with Port Rex looking for an upset win at Cambridge as the hosts have had a bit of an up-and-down season, but they will want to get back-on-track with a good win over Port Rex.

Grens face the daunting task of travelling to Framesby for their clash, with Grens having won only one match this season.
