SUV driver killed, wife injured in EL accident

THE driver of a Gauteng-registered SUV Land Rover died and his wife is still fighting for her life in hospital yesterday after the driver lost control of the vehicle on the N2 near Hemingways mall on Saturday afternoon.

Cambridge police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said it was believed the driver lost control of the SUV as he was trying to overtake another vehicle.

“An eyewitness has reported that the vehicle was trying to overtake when the driver lost control. The driver died on the scene and the woman passenger was rushed to hospital,” said Mbi. The vehicle veered off the road before hitting the side of the road. It then landed back on the road.

● Centane police have arrested three men – aged of 23, 45 and 58 – for possession of an unlicensed homemade firearm.

Butterwort­h police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said the trio were arrested on Saturday at about 9pm near the King Hintsa College. “The suspects were arrested following police intelligen­ce that they were in possession of an unlicensed homemade firearm. The weapon had no ammunition. They will appear in the Centane Magi Court on Monday (today),” said Manatha.

● Butterwort­h police arrested two men in possession of tablets suspected to be drugs. Both were arrested at Skiet informal settlement.

● A man believed to be in his 30s was found dead in Dutywa CBD on Saturday night. He was found on Saturday at about 8pm.

The deceased had an upper body wound. Anyone who can help identify him can call the Dutywa Police on 047- 489-1333.

● No accidents were reported as resulting from the rain and snow in the Eastern Cape this weekend.

SA Weather Service forecaster Kgolofelo Mahlangu said snow had fallen in the north eastern parts of the Eastern Cape province.

“The weather will start clearing on Monday [today] so there will be no rain or snowfall from Monday.

“The temperatur­es are expected to recover‚” she said.
