Border star heads for her third World Cup

- By ROSS ROCHE

BORDER women’s cricket star Ayabonga Khaka was named in the 15-women strong Momentum Proteas team to compete in the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup that will take place in England from June 24 to July 23.

Khaka has become an integral part of the women’s set-up and she will have a big role to play if the team is to have any major success at the showpiece event.

This will, however, be the third World Cup that she has been to with the women Proteas, after having played at two T20 World Cups in previous years, so she will be no stranger to the challenge.

“I am very excited to be going to the World Cup,” said Khaka.

“It will be my first 50-over World Cup and I am looking forward to the experience.”

Khaka has enjoyed a sparkling season, which culminated in her being nominated in the Women’s Cricketer of the Year Award category at the Cricket South Africa awards ceremony held in Johannesburg a week and a half ago.

Despite missing out on the award, which was presented to Sune Luus, Khaka will be very happy to have been recognised and will be eager to keep impressing.

“I have had a good season, so I just want to keep doing well, try and improve my game and help the team,” said Khaka.

The team has just finished a quadrangular series in Potchefstroom, where they lost to India in the final. However, they enjoyed solid wins over Ireland and Zimbabwe as well as beating India once in the group stage.
