Amakhosi keep faith in Komphela

- By MARC STRYDOM

STEVE Komphela will be Kaizer Chiefs’ coach next season‚ chairman of the club Kaizer Motaung has said unequivocally, having only previously appeared to back his employee.

Speaking at what must have been something of a hollow club awards evening in Kyalami on Thursday evening after a second season without a trophy‚ Motaung removed any doubt that Komphela will coach Chiefs in 2017-18. Asked directly if that was the case‚ Motaung answered simply: “Yes.”

He‚ paused‚ then added: “Do we have any reason not to have him next season?”

Pointed out that two seasons without a trophy might be a reason‚ Chiefs’ chairman responded: “Two seasons without a trophy‚ yes. But that’s now water under the bridge.

“We have to look at the way forward. We cannot be held back by what happened in the past‚ or keep our focus on the past. We need to navigate our way forward.

“Because life is all about challenges. When you are confronted by a challenge in front of you‚ you look at the challenge. You don’t look at what happened before.”

Asked what gives him optimism that Komphela can turn things around in a third season‚ Motaung replied: “Well it’s not only up to him.

“It’s up to him and the players. In fact it’s up to the technical team,” Motaung said

“If his technical team is not doing well‚ obviously it will be problematic. But he has to make sure that his technical team are all giving their all in terms of their own contribution. Because football has now evolved. It involves quite a number of things.

“It’s not like those olden days where you used to depend on one man deciding on and thinking‚ ‘ What is good for this player and that player’‚ and depending on his decision alone.” — TMG
