Baby Boks in key cup match

- By ROSS ROCHE

FORMER Border School stars Yaw Penxe and David Brits will be hoping to get another start for the Baby Boks when they take on hosts Georgia in their second match of the U20 Championship at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia tomorrow.

The team will only be announced at around 1:30pm today and, with previous tournaments having shown coaches to rotate their sides so as to give most of the team a run out during the competition’s group stage, it remains to be seen if Penxe and Brits will hold onto their starting berths.

“It is the coach’s call who starts, but if I do get the chance I will be ecstatic,” said Penxe.

Both players made their Baby Bok debuts in the dramatic 23-all draw against France in their first match of the competition on Wednesday, with Penxe lining up on the right wing and Brits at inside centre.

With poor conditions and a forward-orientated game on that occasion, both did not see much of the ball.

“It was a tough game considering the conditions, but I really enjoyed the opportunity to represent my country and in the end the result wasn’t what we wanted but we did give everything we had and I thought we showed some good character to go and get the draw,” said Brits.

The Georgia match is set to be a big one for the team as they will need to pick up a strong win to put themselves in a good position ahead of their final group stage match against Argentina next week.

To guarantee a spot in the semifinals the Baby Boks will need to win their next two matches, so it will be vitally important for them to build some momentum in the Georgia match.

“We definitely need to win both games and by big margins if we can. That will help us, but everything will go as planned if we just stick to our structures,” said Brits.

Hopefully there will be better weather conditions as the Baby Boks have a talented backline that if given the freedom to play will be a threat to any team.

“With our game plan the ball does come out wide, but with the rain during the match against France we couldn’t spread it wide all the time,” said Penxe.

The match kicks off at 4pm and will be televised live on SuperSport 1.
