‘Pervy pastor’ complainants under pressure
WOMEN mobilising against popular “prophet” Mndayi Njengele, with complaints of sexual abuse say they have been threatened.
But more women have come forward to give statements to the Hawks since a Saturday Dispatch report last week.
Hawks spokeswoman Anathi Damane could not confirm further reports of threats but told the Dispatch yesterday: “The investigation is at an advanced stage, therefore this office will not engage further until an arrest is effected.”
The Daily Dispatch understands that the Hawks have visited some of the alleged victims throughout the province and in Cape Town.
More than 20 women shared their alleged testimonies of how they were sexually assaulted by Njengele on a WhatsApp group which included police officials and journalists.
Some incidents date back more than five years.
However, the Daily Dispatch was also approached by some of the women pleading to change their testimonies, and saying they were under pressure to do so from Njengele and his congregates.
Another woman talked about how her mother was verbally attacked and humiliated by a woman congregate while she was shopping in town on Saturday after she told her story on the WhatsApp group.
“I am so scared. I fear for my life. Can the Hawks, SAPs and Ace Ncobo please protect me. I don’t feel safe, If they can do that to my mother, what will they do to me,” she said.
Another said she had been getting frequent visits from members of the church pleading with her not to give her testimony.
“They say we should not talk about our problems to the media,” she said.
