- By NAMHLA MBONGENDLU

The much anticipated Buffalo City Metro Mayoral Cup set BCM stadium alight yesterday afternoon as mayor Xola Pakati gave the keynote address before handing over medals to the players.

In an attempt to select a team to represent the Metro in the South African Local Government Association (Salga) games to be played in November later in the year BCM held its annual Mayor’s Cup tournament. The tournament was comprised of five different sports events including boxing, soccer, netball, volleyball and tennis.

In his address the mayor expressed how proud he was of those who took part in the events and added that plans to improve sports in the Metro are under way.

“There are plans to bring in more sports codes into this event next year,” he said.

He added plans to revamp sports facilities in townships are being considered, especially the swimming pool in Mdantsane NU2. Unfortunately the mayor said he cannot put a time-frame as to when the revamping will take place.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Netball Association president Mpumi Java said she is confident the team selected to represent BCM in the Salga games will bring glory to the Metro.

“We have to nurture and nourish the talent,” she said.
