The ‘homeboy’ is ready to crack East Londoners up

MULTI-talented comedian Rob van Vuuren is bringing his crazy stories to East London today.

He will be performing at Legends Showcase for one night only.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Van Vuuren said coming to East London always felt like coming back home. “I grew up in East London, I went to Lilyfontein and even though we moved when I was in Standard 5 [Grade 7], it still feels like home. I love the city and the coast,” he said.

Van Vuuren said he and his wife would be doing a special show at an accommodation establishment in the city.

“I thought why not put up a comedy show while I am here. The last time I was in East London was five or 10 years ago when I did a stand-up show at the Guild Theatre. The show was great, I had lots of fun and I thought I’d come back the following year but life got in the way,” he said, adding that he was excited he would be hosting a show ahead of the National Arts Festival.

“The East London show is not part of any national tour, it’s a special stand-up comedy show. It will be a mixture of my previous material, more like Rob,” he said.

Van Vuuren is not only a comedian, he has worked as an actor, writer, director, dancer and producer across various genres and in different media across the country.

He has co-hosted shows such as, Crazy Games, SA’s Got Talent and The Most Amazing Show and was also the winner of Strictly Come Dancing.

He has featured in movies such as, Straight Outta Benoni, Footskating 101 and Leon Schuster’s Shucks Tshabalala.

In 2011, Van Vuuren won the inaugural Comic’s Choice Breakthrough Act Award for his stand-up comedy and has also received two Standard Bank Ovation Awards.

He said he was blessed to be able to do everything he loved, from comedy, acting to directing.

“I can never choose one, being able to act and do comedy the best of gives me a change to get a bit of balance between the two,” he said.

Tickets for his one-man show at Legends cost R130 and are available from Lee Gold.

● Tomorrow he will be at the Gin Festival at the C-Club in Chintsa. He will be the MC of the event. Free entry. —
