Roar of thunder set for track

- By ROSS ROCHE

RACING action takes centre-stage at the East London Grand Prix Circuit this weekend with a threehour endurance race taking place on the National Circuit tomorrow.

Some exciting racing is on the cards in what should be an enthralling battle that combines speed, concentration and endurance into one.

Adding to the excitement are the students who will be taking part in the action from the pits to gain insight into motorsport engineering.

“We have also 26 technical students from Buffalo City College as our guests,” Border Motor spokesman Dave Kirkman said.

“East London is the home of Motorsport in South Africa and has produced such world-renowned competitors as Jody Scheckter, Ian Scheckter and Wayne Taylor, we believe this is a very appropriate way to uplift and support the students in this way.”

The Scribantes, Franco and Silvio, will be gunning for back-toback wins in their Chevron, B26 Suzuki V8, after they triumphed at Killarney last time out.

They should be challenged by Keegan, Jason and Rui Campos and their Shelby-Ford V8 as they have SA international Jordan Pepper managing them from the sidelines.

Double Border endurance champs Francis Carruthers and Johan Engelbrecht will also be challenging for the win in their Harp Motorsport/Malta No 1 Aquila CR1 Chevrolet V8.

Carruthers and Engelbrecht came out on top in both the 2015 and 2016 races and it would not be a surprise to see them on the top step of the podium once again.

Fritz Kleynhans and James Forbes in their Comenius Ligier, JS49 Honda were also very quick around the track last year and should be well in the mix.

Other racers to keep an eye on in the pack, include Michael Jensen and Mark Lauth in their Fantastic Racing Renault FR1 and Charl and Harry Arangies in their Stradale Motorsport Ferrari 360 Challenge.

In all, some classic racing should be on the cards with plenty of exciting passing manoeuvres and clever tactics at play, which should thrill all spectators who come out to enjoy the action.

Entry for the day is R50 if tickets are purchased in advance from Vincent Hardware, Best Drive in Cambridge Street, Spargs in Beacon Bay and Ians Auto Clinic. Tickets cost R70 on the day of the race, while kids under 12 enter free.

The action gets under way tomorrow morning at 9am and should conclude by 5.30pm in the afternoon.
