Motorists warned of Dutywa N2 closure

- By SISIPHO ZAMXAKA

MOTORISTS using the N2 between Dutywa and Mthatha will need to plan ahead this week as rock-blasting is set to close the route for hours over two days.

The freeway will be closed from noon to no later than 2pm on tomorrow and Wednesday, and motorists have been advised to use alternative routes. Tomorrow blasting will take place 36.9km from Dutywa towards Mthatha in the Mtentu Cuttings, and on Wednesday 28.2km from Dutywa towards Mthatha.

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) southern region manager, Mbulelo Peterson said yesterday motorists should plan trips accordingly.

“Motorists are asked to consider alternative routes and to exercise caution when making use of the road,” said Peterson.

“Motorists travelling eastwards towards Mthatha may consider exiting the N2 at Ndabakazi on to the R408 towards Ngqamakwe/Tsomo, or taking the R409 at Dutywa towards Ngcobo.

“Both routes link to the R61 and then rejoin the N2 in Mthatha. Similarly, motorists travelling westwards towards East London may consider using the R61 when leaving Mthatha and then link back to the N2 via either the R408 after Ngcobo or R409 towards Tsomo.”

The alternative route is 60km longer and may add about 40 minutes to the trip between East London and Mthatha.

Peterson apologised on behalf of Sanral for any inconvenience. —
