- By ROSS ROCHE

AN exciting development at Border Cricket has seen Andre de Beer appointed as the new coach of the Border U19 and Academy teams.

De Beer takes over the role from Border semi-pro coach Frank Plaatjes, who had doubled up on the roles previously.

“I am very excited. I am grateful for the opportunity and I can't wait to start,” said De Beer.

“I am really looking forward to the challenge as I think I can bring something different to the academy and I think with my full time appointment I can bring the best out of the players.”

De Beer has coached almost all of the Border age group teams and is well known and respected at Border Cricket and will most likely slip into the team seamlessly.

“He has come through the whole system, coaching at all our junior levels and now he has got the opportunity of having a full-time role here and make a difference with the U19 and Academy team,” said amateur cricket coaching manager Deon Muller.

“When Andre moved down here from North West/Potchefstroom he immediately came to us and asked how he could get involved in provincial coaching.”

As a coach De Beer has a a strong history of coaching at junior level.

In 2009 he was the manager/coach for the North West schools’ cricket U15 team which went to nationals and then in 2010 he became vice-chairman of the North West Cricket School Board and also coached the U17 North West team which also went to nationals.

From 2011 to 2012 he was assistant coach for the NWU cricket team and then moved down to East London where at the end of 2012 he was the assistant coach for the Border U17 side.

From 2013 to 2016 De Beer was the coach at the Cricket SA U17 regional camp and in 2014 he became head coach of the Border U15 team, 2015 head coach of the Border U17 team and then last year was head coach of the Border U19 Coca Cola Khaya Majola week team.

He was also the assistant coach for the Warriors Cubs’ team earlier this year and has been assistant to Plaatjes at a number of Border senior provincial matches.

During the period from 2012 to 2017 he has also been a coaching course facilitator and presenter for Border Cricket.

“His eagerness and enthusiasm to get involved paved the way for him to join the Border coaches fraternity.

“He is such a great learner of the game and since arriving has used every opportunity to grow as a coach.

“I have no doubt that he will achieve every success with our U19 and senior academy players.”

De Beer has received a number of coaching qualifications over the years including at Bakers Mini Cricket level, Level one, Level two which he picked up in 2009 and Level three which he got in 2016.

He will now be working very closely with Plaatjes as he looks to get the players ready for senior and semipro cricket.

“My goal is to get the U19 players into the academy system and then make sure they move on into the semipro system,” explained De Beer.

“Me and Frank have a really good relationship. We are going to work closely together and I think there is a lot that I can learn from him.”

De Beer officially starts at Border cricket on Monday.
