No jail time for truck driver after fatal crash
KILLER tow truck driver Johan Schwarz was sentenced to three years’ correctional supervision by the East London District Court last week.
Schwarz, 32, of Active Towing was convicted of culpable homicide following a fatal accident on the N6 near Ducats on the afternoon of June, 26, last year in which Thorin Mallinson, 24, a sales manager at Wansley Quarries, was killed.
When the accident occurred, Schwarz had been racing with another tow truck to an accident scene.
Preliminary reports indicated his tow truck went over the white centre barrier line and drove onto the island, crashing into Mallinson.
Mallinson had been driving to his Beacon Bay home in a Corsa bakkie from a meeting with a client when Schwarz collided with him.
The former Stirling High School pupil, who was a prefect in primary school, died on impact.

Maponya911 ambulance driver Phumelele Tiyo, 34, was caught on film participating in a road rage incident with a Dynamic EMS driver on the N2 near the Amalinda turn-off in November 2015.
A two-minute video clip showed the Dynamic ambulance, driven by Luvo Tyokolo, which was driving in front, blocking Tiyo from overtaking.
A frustrated Tiyo was heard on the video saying: “I am going to beat him [Tyokolo]. I am going to kick him, you will see.
“When we get to the scene I am going to head-butt him.”
The tension escalated at the scene when Tiyo assaulted Tyokolo, who drew a firearm and pointed it at the Maponya911 driver.
