Mancosa matric winter classes begin

A PRIVATE higher education institution, Management College of Southern Africa (Mancosa) in Vincent Park, East London, held its first matric winter classes this week, where pupils from schools in the area were taken out of the school environment for a week of revision and studying to help prepare for exams.

The institution is providing free classes in mathematics and accounting. School marketer Quinton Smith said they had earlier this year approached schools closer to their campus and invited them to the winter classes.

The institution said it was planning on conducting more extra classes during the year and hoped to help out more schools.

Mancosa hopes that the extra classes will also help to improve the Eastern Cape’s matric pass rate.

“Since these are our first ever classes in our East London satellite campus, we approached schools that are closer to the institution for easier access and to keep costs low for pupils.

“It was important for us as an institution to give back to the community by providing the classes free. It is also important to support pupils because these are the same learners who also, after completing matric, come to our institution for higher education qualifications,” said Smith.

East London office manager John Fernandez said they mostly had pupils from Beaconhurst and Green Point high schools. He said that the institution had hired external tutors to help the pupils.

Fernandez said pupils had been coming in dribs and drabs depending on the different subjects but the classes had so far been successful.

They tried to keep the groups as manageable as possible so as to give individual attention to learners, he added.

“Our aim is to guide matriculants because some schools don’t have the means to provide extra classes,” he said. —
