Amavarara will press on despite setback

- By MFUNDO PILISO

AMAVARARA might have not made it through to the ABC Motsepe League when they were outplayed during playoffs last month in Fort Hare University but they are surely not down and out as yet.

Amavarara bounced back over the weekend, winning the Mayor’s Cup at local municipality level.

The Lady Frere side is now set to represent Emalahleni Local Municipality at the Chris Hani District Mayor’s Cup later this month.

Amavarara team manager Zandi Mzwakali said losing at the playoffs was a huge disappointment for the team.

“It’s obvious we wanted that promotion but we lost it in the end.”

She said the team’s motivation is the youth involved in the dayto-day operations of the club, including the players.

“The talented young individuals that we have in our team are our greatest motivation.

“Being able to mentor and develop these children on and off the field gives us satisfaction,” she said.

Mzwakali said the team’s goals are more than that of an ordinary soccer team.

“We have a number of players currently in Grade 12 and some in university so it’s always been bigger than soccer,” she said.

She said the team aims to come back stronger than ever before.

“We want to win the league again. We will make it to the playoffs again and win them.

“Winning this Mayor’s Cup would be a confidence boost and a message to all our faithful supporters that we are and always will be Amavarara,” she said.

Mzwakali said the boys worked hard to get to where they are and were also prepared for the final showdown.

“The competition was okay. We beat them simply because we are the better side and we have more experience,” she said.

Last year the cup was won by Young Stars from Instika Yethu Local Municipality.

The participants in the cup tournament include representatives from Engcobo, Inxuba Yethemba, Tsolwana, Sakhisizwe, Inkwanca, Lukanji, Intsika Yethu, Emalahleni – all the local municipalities falling under Chris Hani District. The cups’ tournament dates will be announced by the district in due course.
