Fuzile to face ‘War of Attrition’

- By BONGANI MAGASELA

A RIVER of tears will be formed and quickly filled moments after crowd favourite Azinga “Golden Boy” Fuzile parts ways with his South African featherweight boxing title and ultimately tastes defeat against Rofhiwa “War Child” Maemu at Orient Theatre on July 30, warns trainer Alan Toweel Junior.

Johannesburg-based mentor Toweel, whose boxer Maemu will challenge Fuzile said: “I would not have accepted the offer if I did not believe that Rofhiwa will win.

“Azinga is a good fighter, a lefthander that is very awkward but come fight night, a new champion will be crowned.”

The bout will headline Rumble Africa Promotions bill.

Fuzile’s career is guided by promoter Thembalethu “Tarries” Nuthu, who staged Fuzile’s debut as a professional boxer at Orient Theatre, where the former top amateur outfoxed ring veteran Sibusiso Khulamo over eight rounds in December 2014.

Added Toweel: “This title has been in Rofhiwa’s mind for a very long time. We challenged then champion Mabhuti when Rofhiwa was the number one contender a year ago and the fight did not happen. That opportunity has finally come. Rofhiwa knows too well that he is an underdog going to this fight. We will challenge Azinga in his backyard and in front his people but we will be up to the task.”

Toweel said they were going against popular belief that Fuzile will do a number on Maemu.

“Some people are already talking about Azinga’s next fight and they will get a shock,” said Toweel, adding: “I hope we get treated fairly if the bout goes the scheduled 12round distance because some decisions against outsiders in East London have been controversial. I do not want to sound like I am criticising officials, but there had been dubious decision down there.”

Fuzile is a 20-year-old crowdpuller from Duncan Village, who is yet to lose after seven fights.

He won the SA title in only his fifth professional bout from ring veteran and one-time knockout artist Mabhuti “Macman” Sinyabi in September last year.

The left-hander, who is trained by Mzamo “Chief” Njekanye in Duncan Village, will bid for the second defence. Fuzile is fresh from an exciting defence against Sydney “Skeleton” Maluleke in May. The 2016 prospect of the year award winner remained undefeated in seven fights.
