Keen pupils take on extra classes

WHILE thousands of pupils have been enjoying the July school holidays, more than 500 pupils in Buffalo City Metro have been attending winter classes, in the hope of improving their results.

The free winter classes held at Masixole Secondary School in Mdantsane have been hosted by the education department and JENN Training and Consulting.

The classes mainly focus on the core subjects, maths, physical science, accounting and life sciences. It is hoped that the classes will contribute in an improved Eastern Cape matric pass rate this year.

School principal Thobeka Sotyifa said although the school was initially supposed to host nine under-performing schools from the district, pupils from former Model C schools such as Clarendon, Hudson Park and Cambridge High among others, were also attending the classes.

“We were initially supposed to be hosting classes for under-performing schools but we have had learners from schools all over East London and they are actually the ones who attend on a regular basis,” she said.

Classes kicked off on July 3 and will run until this coming Saturday. There are three sessions a day running from 8am until 4.30pm.

Project administrator at JENN, Lizo Rola said the company was not only providing study guides and paying for the tutors, but had also provided each pupil with schoolbags and stationery.

He said they also brought in speakers from various higher learning institutions to talk to pupils about furthering their studies after matric and to also provide them with relevant information on how exactly to apply for varsity.
