Japan-bound Cronje likely to return to Kings for Pro12 games

- By GEORGE BYRON

THOUGH charismatic Southern Kings skipper Lionel Cronje is making a beeline for Japan to play for Toyota Verblitz after Friday’s clash against the Cheetahs, he has not ruled out the possibility of returning to Port Elizabeth in the future.

Cronje, who inspired the Kings to a sensational 31-30 win over the Bulls on Saturday, will be linking up with former Springbok coach Jake White.

This is a blow to the Kings who will have to find a new leader for their expected debut in the European Pr012 league which kicks off in September.

However, there is chance that Cronje could opt to return to Port Elizabeth for the Kings in the latter stages of the Pro12 after the Japanese season.

News that Cronje would be leaving for Japan first broke in May after it emerged that White had lured the Kings pivot and Bulls lock Jason Jenkins to Japan.

Asked how difficult it would be to leave the Kings after their successful season, Cronje said: “Unfortunately, that is decision that I had to make some time back. I spoke to coach (Deon Davids) and I would like to come back to the Eastern Cape to represent them again.

“I come from a background where I need to be loyal to people who entrust me with opportunity. So I would like to come back and give more back to the people of the East Cape after that. So, if that opportunity arises, I would love to do that.”

Kings officials want a big crowd to attend Friday’s clash to give Cronje and his team a stirring send-off.

More than 20 000 fans watched the Kings’ home games against the Sharks and Brumbies and another big crowd is expected.

After the move to Japan was announced Cronje said: “The Japanese move offers job security and financial stability. Japan will prove a refreshing, new experience for me and my wife.

“Jake White has been appointed as head coach at the club and I have previously worked with Jake at the Brumbies and Sharks and I’m looking forward to linking up with him again and improving my all-round game.

“And I would really love to return to South Africa to play next year during the Top League’s off-season if an opportunity presents itself.”

Cronje said his team had embraced the opportunities that came their way during a season that has seen them win six of their 14 matches.

“We just really wanted to win games, play for each other and be passionate about what we do,” Cronje said.

The Kings are expected to name their team to take on the Cheetahs tomorrow.
