City unpack big plans for league

Coach banks on data analysis

MTHATHA City plans to hit the ground running in the upcoming ABC Motsepe League season when they take on some of the province’s best teams in the third-tier league.

The team recently sent their Uefa Basic Licence holder head coach to a notational data analysis course in Cape Town in order to learn more about movement patterns, strategy and tactics in team sports.

City coach Nkush Malgas said he learnt how to make a breakdown in terms of player and team stats and the knowledge will boost his planning strategy from now onwards.

“During our coaching courses we don’t normally get deep inside the video analysis and coding, which is to break down moments during the game.

“Now if we, as the technical team, want to use the clips during the break [half-time] my knowledge will come in handy,” he said.

He said the club had invested in equipment required to perform such functions, which is a video camera, a computer and an overhead projector.

Malgas said his team will benefit immensely from the course.

“This will benefit us very much as it is inline with the current school curriculum of visuals, as most schools are now having computer labs,” he said.

“Pitso Mosimane did it when Mamelodi Sundowns won the league in 15/16 season.

“He bought each of his players a tablet then gave them assignment­s of working on opposition­s,” he added.
