EL woman who sold drugs to pupils jailed

AN EAST London woman who sold drugs to an undercover police officer disguised as a schoolboy on three occasions, was yesterday sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment by the East London Regional Court.

Julie Dalldorf, 35, of Beacon Bay, previously pleaded guilty to four counts of drug dealing and drug possession. The court heard she sold drugs to schoolchildren in and around East London for two years, and made a profit of R10 000 a month.

In a scathing judgment, magistrate Ignatius Kitching said: “This court deals with massive amounts of drugs cases every day, fuelled by foreigners, especially Nigerians.

“They are ruthless and brutal in their trade. They supply to a network which you [Dalldorf] were part of. During your trial this court heard a shocking and disturbing account from a school teacher of what happens in classrooms.

“The teachers are fighting a losing battle against drugs, and addiction remains difficult to overcome.”

Dalldorf stood in the dock and cried amid sentencing.

Kitching continued: “The fact that you were previously convicted of drug possession last year in February means you knew what you were doing, and that dagga was going to school kids. You were given a suspended sentence last year, and had ample time to reflect on what you were doing.”

Kitching said a non-custodial sentence “would never be an adequate and appropriate sentence”.

He sentenced Dalldorf to seven years’ imprisonment and ordered that she be declared unfit to possess a firearm in the future.

She turned back and faced her elderly mother, seated in the gallery with other family members, and whispered, “I love you”.

Dalldorf was then escorted down to the holding cells.

The jail term was imposed despite Dalldorf’s attorney Newsane Kolla’s plea that his client not be used “to set an example” for other drug dealers arrested in the same sting operation.

However, state prosecutor Henker Ackerman countered that argument, saying the sentence needed to be harsh as there was overwhelming interest in the case among society.

“The community has an interest, that their children should not be exposed to drug dealers. Selling drugs to children is sowing seeds of destruction,” Ackerman said. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
