Highs and lows for Border rugby sides

- By MFUNDO PILISO

INJURIES cost the Border U16 team at the Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week while the Border U13s ended the Coca-Cola Craven Week yesterday nn a high note beating the Limpopo Blue Bulls and having won most of their matches at Grey College in Bloemfontein.

U13 Craven Week manager Andre Matthee said management was proud of the team’s achievement and they deserved everything coming their way because they had worked very hard.

“We beat the Pumas on the first day then we also played another tough match against Boland. We thought we were in the game but sadly we lost 32-22 and then today we played the Limpopo Blue Bulls winning 31-29.

“The boys played very well. They played for their province and they also played for each other. They even played for us as management and we very proud of the boys,” said Matthee.

U16 Grant Khomo Week coach Luyanda Mpande said they were disappointed that they lost two games even though the four matches they played were close.

“Our goal was not to lose so many games but the boys played well. The games were tight and they could have gone either way so I am not disappointed that much with the boys.”

Mpande continued: “We had a couple of set backs with injuries that hindered our line-up but that’s not an excuse.

“Its was a factor in our game but with that said the boys played really well.”

He said they could have defended better and committed fewer of the odd mistakes but with many injuries it was virtually impossible not to.

“At one stage we ended up with a hooker playing centre in the last game because of injuries and our boys were playing out of place all the time.

“But still we could have defended a little bit better.”
