Record nomination­s in for Satma 2017

THE South African Traditiona­l Music Achievemen­t Awards (Satma) 2017 received a record 200 000 nomination entries since its inception in 2006.

This as the Satmas nomination process for Satma 2017 under the theme “Celebratin­g legends - #SATMAXII” officially closed last week.

Therewas a total of 190 613 SMS nomination­s received in 63 days since voting lines were opened on May 20.

“Furthermor­e, we have a total of 449 CDs and 697 entries from May 20 to July 21. There are 410 total entries received for part one categories with the highest entries recorded are in the Best Newcomer category with a total of 115 entries. The total number of CDs is 245 and highest entries recorded are in the Best Newcomer category with a total of 66 entries,” said project manager Jo Kerwane.

Kerwane said that Satmas’ task is to screen the submitted entries and all relevant informatio­n will be sent out through press statements and posted on their website as well as on social media.

She said the shortliste­d nominees will be announced at the Durban Internatio­nal Convention Centre on August 12.

Voting lines will be open from August 10 to August 12.

The main awards ceremony will be hosted at the Durban ICC on September 29-30.

“There are five cars to be won during the main event, as well as a R20 000 prize for each winner and trip overseas for two category winners,” said Kerwane.

“This brand has contribute­d a lot when it comes to the developmen­t of traditiona­l music in this country and has also exposed traditiona­l music across the globe. We are the first awards to reward our award-winning artists with prizes including monetary, resources and education assistance and not just a beautiful trophy.”
